Tommy Alverson's Family Gathering #9 Tres Rios River Ranch Glen Rose, TX October 4-7, 2006

| Every
year I seem to say “This was the best ever” when comes to Tommy Time.
That’s what we call Tommy Alverson’s Annual Family Gathering, this being
#9. Tommy and his crew seem to find a way to make it better every year, by
changing the line-ups every year to include new and upcoming artists that
haven’t yet played the festival. I’ve seen many an artist there I haven’t
seen before, but usually have heard of through my musical journeys via the
internet. This year I saw Amos Staggs, Kyle Bennett Band, Steve Tenpenny, BlacktopGYPSY, Jamie Richards and Moot Davis for the first time. They were all impressive but I was most impressed with BlacktopGYPSY and Jamie Richards. Also on the bill was Johnny Gringo, Walt Wilkins, Sam Baker, Jed & Kelly, Mike Blakely, Trent Summar, Adam Carroll, all of whom I did not get to see. Eleven Hundred Springs put on a good show, and it was great to see Steve Berg back on stage with them. Another act I’m sorry I missed was Very Handsome Men, who came all the way from Australia to play the festival and hung around all weekend to enjoy the music. I think Australians are a lot like Texans in many ways. Randy Brown, Miss Leslie & Her Juke Jointers, Kevin Deal, Chuck Pyle, Terry Rasor & Over The Edge, Michael Hearne & SXSW were also on the stage. Cooder Graw and Jason Boland & The Stragglers drew a huge crowd at the front of the stage. While Cooder Graw rocked out, Jason Boland's band played mostly country and they were tight. Both put on great performances, but I enjoyed Jason and his band more on this night. Another highlight was Bob Livingston and, of course, the living legend Johnny Bush. Joe Pat Hennen was a no show due to a family emergency, but there was plenty of music despite the hitch. I was disappointed that Ed Burleson had no voice by the time his band got on stage, but he had been there for two days singing around the campfires and sitting in a tune or two with other bands. Max Stalling put on a stellar set as did Cornell Hurd Band, who always entertain and get the crowd in a partying mood.
Of course, Tommy jammed with many of the players
for several hours on Saturday night, and they talked of an even bigger
blow out next year for their 10th anniversary. I can't wait. So as a song sung by Cooder Graw goes, "If you don't have fun, it's your own damn fault". Click here to view pictures of this event.
