While there are many female musicians out there today singing honky tonk, none do it quite like the California-born, Heather Myles.  Her Bakersfield-style and pure country voice give her honky tonk songs a special twist.  On top of that, she wrote ten of the twelve songs on her "Highways and Honky Tonks" CD she co-produced in 1998.   Her songwriting is as good as her performing.  I'm not sure what year Heather started her music career, but I think it was in the late '80's.

Heather attributes her love of country music to her mother and her ear for writing music to her grandfather, who was a Scottish bagpipe player.  I don't know how the bagpipes brought her around to writing honky tonk music, but whatever works!  For her, it worked well.  Heather has worked with several of the great names in country music and is popular in the U.S. and abroad.

This is not Heather's first album.  She has recorded four albums, one being a live CD recorded at the Bottom Line in London called Sweet Little Dangerous.   Her other two discs are Just Like Old Times and Untamed.   I have all four, but in my opinion, this one best showcases her mastery of honky tonk music.

My favorites on this album are "Broken Heart for Sale" (I love the piano), "Mr. Lonesome" and "No One Is Gonna' Love You Better" (sung as a duet with Merle Haggard on this CD), it's awesome.  "You're Gonna' Love Me Some Day" and "Playing Every Honky Tonk In Town", with a three-steppin' beat are both great tunes as well.  Heather sings two covers on this album, "Kiss An Angel Good Morning" and "I'll Be There If You Ever Want Me" like she wrote them herself.  There's not a song on this album I don't like, so if you a honky tonk fan, this album should be in your collection.

For a taste of her songwriting talent, I chose the words to "Broken Heart for Sale":

"For sale- broken heart for sale
Needs tender loving care
If you need a spare
This broken heart's for sale

Blue- if you like the shade of blue
Make an offer you can't lose
I know it's tried and true.

Chorus:
You might find the missing pieces
If you love it and don't leave it
For sale, broken heart for sale,
Needs tender loving care,
Shows a little wear,
Gotta broken heart for sale.

Needs tender loving care
If you need a spare
Gotta broken heart for sale."

It's classic honky tonk country at its best, especially in today's times.

Have you got a broken heart for sale?  If you could sing about it like Heather does, I bet you could sell it!
