I am pleased to report that the benefit and tribute to the legendary Rockabilly star, Ronnie Dawson,
was well attended and was reported to have earned "a big check" that will be given to Ronnie and Chris
to help towards medical expenses for Ronnie. The "Rockabillies" as I called the obvious fans, who
were dressed like a scene out of "Happy Days", were there to hear and see some great living legends
pay tribute and honor another living legend and friend in Ronnie. And with everyone ever mindful
of why we were there, it was still a fun-filled day of some of the best music there is on earth and some
very entertaining dancing by the "Rockabillies". It reminded me of what my mom and dad called the
Jitterbug! I sure saw a lot of the jitterbug moves in the dancing going on, and it was a lot of fun to watch.
Most of the artists I hadn't seen before, like Hepcat DeVille, Ray Sharpe, Marti Brom, Teisco Del Rey,
Huelyn Duvall, Ted Roddy, The Susans and Shaun Young. Others I had seen several times like Eleven
Hundred Springs and The Cornell Hurd Band, but it was great seeing both of these bands again. I was
amazed at how well the bands backed so many special guest singers. I also must mention Cowboys and
Indians, as they put on a power packed set that brought the crowd to their feet for the only ovation I saw
that day.
The parking lot was smattered with classic cars and trucks, and several cool bikes decorated the sidewalk
in front of the hall I had fun taking pictures of them and admiring them, as I am a fan of the classics. The
crowd would grow and thin out and grow again until it finally packed out by dark.
One of the highlights of the day for me was meeting Justin Trevino in person and having a chance to speak
with him for a few minutes. He played bass for Cornell Hurd and sang a few songs. I absolutely love Justin's
voice and style, and he is one of my current favorites in honky tonk. Click here to read my review of his CD,
"Scene Of The Crying".
The atmosphere at this event was one of the coolest I've ever experienced. I actually met another extension
of the music family and man, are they fun! I like rockabilly almost as much as honky tonk now! Thanks to
all of you who gave so graciously of your time, talent and love to make it happen. It was an awesome day, a
truly unique experience that will remain memorable for a long time. And a special thanks to Jo Nicodemus
for her efforts in coordinating the benefit and for her love of music and mankind. I also must mention KNON
Radio, Mark Mundy, David Benseon, and all the volunteers at the Sons of Hermann Hall, because without them
it couldn't have happened.
The only thing missing at this party (besides food), was Ronnie himself. I wish he could have been there, but
then again...I know, he was....he lives in the hearts of all who were there. God bless Rockin' Ronnie and thanks
for all your contributions to great music.
We love ya, man! Miss Lana 6/3/03
