Larry Joe Taylor

"Summer Days"

by Dave Avery

"Here come those summer days, there goes my blues away."  What a great way to start off Larry Joe Taylor's new CD Summer Days.  Recorded (and almost written entirely) in Port Aransas, Larry Joe has put out a remarkable, varied music gumbo.  It's Coastal and Western, reggae ("Fall Like A Stone" is an excellent driving song), country, and best off all- just good music.  Larry surrounds himself with excellent musicians and people to produce a top notch offering:  Lloyd Maines, Steven Fromholz, Bob Livingston, Davin James, Riley Osborne, and the usual cast of characters that make up his full band, including John Inmon, Zack Taylor, Mark Fishback and Chris Browning.

Riley's B-3 playing and Chris's sax are two elements that have come together to make this disc a true pleasure to listen to over and over again.  Just when you think that you have heard everything, there are subtle layers waiting to be discovered- a little doo-wop background, and neat chord changes here and there.

It all adds up to a CD that won't get stale anytime soon. "Second Wind", "Summer Days", "Take it Breezy", and "Miss the Boat" are excellent examples of LJT's songwriting mastery.  Don't miss the boat on Summer Days.  It's a CD that will take you back to island time every day of the year.
